HUMN 341 week 5 analysis

Gay woman wins Houston mayoral race

Houston made history with the first openly gay candidate winning the election. Annise Parker plan to transform all Houstonians for the better. Has this election changed the world for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community? Well, it depends on which category one falls under. The questions for the city of Houston should be. Does sexuality matter in politics? Can a gay person make rational decisions? The vote margin shows Parker with 53% of the votes.

Parker's sexuality has been the focus of this campaign, but voters have shown society that culture can change and the best person for the job shall reign, by putting past beliefs in the past. Although anti-gay activists and religious groups were against Parker because of her homosexual behavior, the public vote still was in her favor.

How will this effect Houston as a city or the nation as a whole? Only time will tell, however I feel somehow we have not heard the last of this.

HUMN 341 Assignment 4-1

What is Tiger hiding?

The media is having a field day with Tiger Woods. Is he really hiding something or does he want to be normal and keep his private life, private? Well, with all the fame he has acquired through the years he cannot be placed on a chart with normal people. He is truly a public icon and his life is considered public by the media. Whatever the truth is, Tiger is not talking, at least not to the police or the media.
With all the speculation going on Tiger Woods has somehow avoided talking with anyone in the public arena. Six women have come forward to announce that Tiger is truly a tiger. However, these stories are one sided and Tiger has not shared his side to these uneven novels. The media is jumping to conclusions because Tiger is not the Dummy some may have taken him for. i think the media and everyone else should leave Tiger ALONE. If he is guilty of anything, he owes his wife an explanation, not the public. I am tired of seeing the media stretch situations out of proportion and leave families torn apart because of mistakes made in private. Just because Tiger is not willing to come out and trash his wife/ mother of his children, does not mean that maybe the man does not feel bad about what has happened.
Until Tiger talks, all of this is pure speculation. The Bible challenges "all without sin cast the first stone". Seems like a good statement to me.

U.S. to lean on mortgage companies

President Barack Obama and his administrative cabinet are attempting to keep more people in their homes by lowering the monthly payment on the home owner's loan. One of the champagne topics Obama showed concern about when he was seeking election as the president of The United States; was to help American keep the dream of homeowner ship alive. His administration is pressing the mortgage companies on helping people stay in their homes.
Reports from the Mortgage Bankers Association released last week, show 14 percent of home owner's are either behind in payments or entering into foreclosure, for the ninth straight quarter. It has also been suggested that homeowner;s who have a conventional or fixed rate mortgage is threatening foreclosure.
Unemployment which hit a 26 year high of 10.2 percent seems to be the cause for the mortgage defaults. Although, there are no programs to assist the unemployed with their mortgage payments, many private lenders are adjusting payments on loans for home owner's in fear of losing their homes.
The Obama administration will be announcing an expansion attempt that would produce more aid to struggling home owner's and expand the number of organizations providing help.

Weekly analysis Assignment 2-1 HUMN 341

Setting aside the ROSES, in an attempt to silence a long fought rivalry.
That is exactly what The Ohio State Buckeyes did Saturday, November 21, 2009. YES, the BUCKEYES has done it again, with a sixth straight win against their long time chief rival; Michigan. Ohio State had taken much criticism over the past week about their ability to win big, well this was a big game for the buckeyes and they showed that they can win big. Not only did they win, but they have won the big ten title outright and earned a trip to Pasadena to play in the Rose Bowl, they also kept Michigan from going to a bowl game two years in a row.

Although Michigan had more yards in the first half than Ohio State, they were not able to put the ball in the end zone enough to walk away with the win. They turned the ball over six times due to interceptions. Ohio State didn't play great football, but they played good enough to win.

Contemporary Icons

When I think of contemporary icons Mickey Mouse, Michael Jordan, and the Statue of Liberty comes to mind. I chose these three icons because they all share the magic. Mickey Mouse displays magic through laughter and imagination. Michael Jordan demonstrated magic on the basketball court and the Statue of Liberty shows magic to everyone who believes in the freedom of the United States of America.

Mickey Mouse is Walt Disney's most famous character. Born November 18, 1928, Mickey Mouse has entertained children and adults for eighty one years, creating relationships with all ages and races and is one of the most universal symbols of the twentieth century. Mickey Mouse was a little guy born out of the depression that satirized people's foibles and taught them to laugh. Because of his warmth of bringing the family together, Mickey Mouse has impacted the American dream.

Michael Jordan was to basketball what milk is to cereal, the flavor that keeps the taste alive. Michael Jordan was the most dominant basketball player in the world during the 1990's. He won the NBA's most valuable player award five times, and six times led the Chicago Bulls to the league championship (1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997 and 1998). In October of 1993 Michael Jordan stunned his fans and the basketball world by retiring from basketball and beginning a professional baseball career. In 1995 he returned to basketball and retired from basketball all together by 2003. Michael Jordan was inducted into the basketball hall of fame in 2009.

The Statue of Liberty is more than a monument; she is a beloved friend, and living symbol of freedom to the world. Lady Liberty(as she is nicknamed) was given to the United States by France during the American Revolution. This statue is one of the most recognizable icons of the United States, it welcomes visitors, immigrants, and returning Americans traveling by ship. Lady Liberty represents a woman wearing a stola, a radiant crown and sandals, trampling a broken chain, carrying a torch in her raised right hand and a tabula ansata tablet in her left hand. This beautiful American Icon stands on Liberty Island, located in the New York harbor.

Weekly analysis Assignment 1-4 HUMN 341

My weekly analysis for assignment 1-4 is about The Ohio State Buckeyes. I am a big buckeye fan and I read an article shortly after the Iowa game, which the buckeyes won in overtime 27 to 24. The article suggested that Ohio State can't win the big game because coach Jim Tressell holds on to a lead instead of trying to win the game. I agree with the article, but being the fan that I am, I am very disappointed in the way the buckeyes are represented. The NCAA must think that we (the buckeyes) are a joke. How will we ever get respect if we are lead around like babies, while one coach gets his glory!!!!!!! Yeah we won the Iowa game, but it was sloppy and ugly.

Popular Culture

What is popular culture? Popular culture is a way of life, attitudes, beliefs, behaviors and customs of different people.
What does popular culture mean to me? To me popular culture means many people have different beliefs and behaviors, but live in one world. In order to live together do not necessarily mean we have to share the same traits in life.
Understanding popular culture is important to me now and in the future because of my present position on my job and the future I am working toward. Currently I work with all different cultures at Columbus City Schools. I talk and interact with many different nationalities of children. I am an accounting major and I plan to work in the accounting field as a fraud examiner. That will include talking, interview, and making contact with many different people. Being able to understand there culture will help me greatly in performing my duties

I chose Mickey Mouse as my popular culture artifact. Mickey has been a part of America and other parts of the world for 80 years and counting. Adults and children of many different cultures has had the privilege of enjoying this cute little mouse. With two resorts (Disneyland and Disney World), Disney has helped children and adults see magic through entertainment and imagination.
